Easing Stress in Uncertain Times

April is National Stress Awareness Month, and as we make our way through some uncertain times, it’s clear that stress is on the rise. At home, on the street, and in the workplace, folks are feeling the strain.
For leaders, these can be particularly challenging times. How they respond to stress can positively or negatively affect the entire team. It’s common for leaders to react poorly in high-stress situations. Studies show that 53% tend to become more controlling, while 43% tend to get angry. Both behaviors, of course, serve to raise stress levels across the board.
Clear communication is the first step leaders can take toward lowering stress and creating a more stable workplace. Silence breeds uncertainty. Even if all the information isn’t available, leaders who are transparent and keep team members up to date foster a sense of calm and stability.
While the big victories may seem elusive, celebrating the small wins along the way and recognizing the progress that’s been made can bring the team together and keep everyone motivated and focused on that larger goal.
Flexibility is another key to maintaining forward momentum in uncertain times. Relaxing some strict expectations can give your team some breathing room. Staying nimble and keeping open to new models, from hybrid work situations to flexible hours, are additional ways leaders can support team members.
These days, empathy can sometimes seem in short supply. Caring for and staying in touch with employees on both their business and personal sides can go a long way toward easing any simmering problems or anxieties. Leaders who show genuine empathy are far more successful in building trusting, successful relationships and productive workplaces.
Effective leaders always set the example for the team, and modeling healthy stress management can go a long way to helping team members manage their stress and keeping them on track.
